Benign vs Malignant
Aug. 5th, 2010 05:35 pmAs mentioned previously around here, the thing that was in my ankle that has led to all this kerfuffle was an osteoclastoma, or Giant Cell Tumour (GCT) of the bone. It's a slow-growing thing which has a 50% chance of local recurrence (according to wikipedia). To all intents and purposes this is like cancer tumour without the cancer bit, which is nice. What I had was benign and therefore not hugely dangerous, just problematic. It was not malignant, which is when you start having issues and regular appointments with the chemotherapy drip.
Sometimes, usually while reading an article or book on the subject, I become acutely aware of how lucky I am that, by the grace of God, the tumour was not cancerous. It still can cause me to have to sit down and ponder Life, The Universe and Everything, perhaps more so than in earlier years, now I know the full meaning behind the words benign and malignant. Perhaps one day I will appreciate it fully as well.
